Signs of Overwatering vs Underwatering

Overwatering is the number-one killer of houseplants. Symptoms include yellowing lower leaves, mushy stems, a musty smell, fungus gnats and soil that stays wet for many days.

Underwatering shows as crispy brown leaf edges, drooping that recovers quickly after watering, and soil pulling away from the pot edges.

When in doubt, wait. Most plants recover from a little drought far more easily than from root rot caused by soggy soil.
